Born in Bogotá, Colombia, lives and works in New York, NY.
Colombian-born painter Fanny Sanin is one of the greatest living color field painters.
Fanny Sanin graduated in 1960 from the Universidad de Los Andes in Bogota. She traveled to London where she studied printmaking. She began her artistic life as an abstract painter, but free in the sense that in her works you could not clearly recognize geometric figures.
Sanín moved from her native Colombia to New York, where she has been based since 1971, and made the transition from gestural to geometric abstraction.
She participated in the National Salon of Artists of 1962 (also in 1974) and then moved to Mexico, where she began making a name for herself. Soon after she was invited by Traba to exhibit in Bogota.
In Colombia, she has participated in solo and group exhibitions in different cities.
In 1968, she began a series of hard-edge canvases, embracing the discipline of geometric abstraction at the moment when its heroic years came to a close in Latin America.
A mid-career retrospective at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá in 1987 provided Sanín the opportunity to reflect on her body of work; this was followed by a reinterpretation and renewal of her previous practice.
Sanin has exhibited her work in 250 group shows and 35 solo or retrospective exhibitions. Sanín was included in the travelling exhibition of Latin American Women Artists 1915-1995, which opened at the Milwaukee Art Museum.
She has also exhibit in Caracas, London and the U.S.
