Carmen Herrera - Ikon, Wed to 13 Sep
By ROBERT CLARK - Article history - Cuban-born, New York-based painter Carmen Herrera has stood as an exemplary figure of individualistic creative integrity for over half a century. Hers is an utterly uncompromising body of work. Through decades of swiftly changing trends, she has pursued an almost ascetic course of severe geometrical abstraction that can somehow be quite emotionally uplifting and affecting. If there's deceptive simplicity in painting, this is surely the height of it. There's something almost primal about these basic abstract constructs but they also look thoroughly spirited and up to date, some of them hinting at a distinctly jazzy or pop Cuban/Manhattan aesthetic.
